The Unseen Divide: Why Military Service is Often Ridiculed by Those Who Haven’t Served

See Chris Hayes debunk the right-wing ‘B.S.’ about Tim Walz’s military career
Democratic VP pick Tim Walz’s experience in the armed forces is an atypical one for most Americans— particularly for politicians. But that doesn’t stop JD Vance from baselessly accusing Walz of “stolen valor.”

Click here to read Fact check: Walz retired from Army National Guard after 24 years to run for Congress
The timeline is clear: Walz submitted his guard retirement papers in May 2005. The unit’s first call-up notice came in July 2005 and the regiment deployed in March 2006.

I was curious about his military career, because I come from a military family

So, I did a couple of SIMPLE Google searches to find the information above

I found a video done by James Laporta, stuttering and stammering, NOT KNOWING ANY OF THE INFORMATION I FOUND ON THE CBS NEWS ARTICLE

He works for CBS News

The other Google search I did was when did walz submit retirement papers

The Fact article was the first one I found

I'm thinking there are a LOT of inept reporters that have no clue on how to Google things

That or they're trying to uplift a fascist, CONald Grump in order to destroy Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?

A podiatrist explains the condition Trump said earned him a medical deferment from Vietnam
On Monday, President Donald Trump tweeted out a series of attacks on Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal's record during the Vietnam War. Trump himself had five deferments from service in Vietnam, four were for education, and the fifth was a medical deferment, for a foot condition he described as heel spurs. We asked podiatric surgeon Dr. Jacqueline Sutera (who has not treated Mr. Trump) to explain the diagnosis.

In a world that often appears deeply divided, one of the more perplexing phenomena is the way some individuals who have never served in the military choose to ridicule those who have. This includes those who have dedicated 20 years or more to their service. To understand this unsettling dynamic, it’s essential to explore a range of factors that contribute to this behavior.

1. Misconceptions and Stereotypes

One of the primary reasons for this ridicule stems from misconceptions and stereotypes about military life. Many people who have never served may not fully grasp the complexities and sacrifices associated with military service. They might view soldiers through a narrow lens, influenced by outdated stereotypes or media portrayals that paint them as either overly glorified heroes or unthinking, robotic enforcers. This limited perspective can lead to a lack of empathy and an inclination to dismiss or ridicule what they don’t understand.

2. Misalignment of Values

Military service requires a specific set of values and disciplines, which might not always align with civilian norms or priorities. For example, the focus on hierarchy, obedience, and structured routines in the military can seem alien or even unnecessary to those outside the service. This misalignment can breed misunderstanding and, in some cases, disdain. When civilian values conflict with the experiences of veterans, it’s easier to mock or dismiss these experiences rather than trying to understand them.

3. Envy and Resentment

Another psychological factor is envy. Veterans who have served for decades have achieved something that is both challenging and commendable, which can spark resentment in those who feel they have not accomplished as much. This envy can manifest as ridicule or belittlement. When people feel insecure about their own achievements or life choices, they might lash out at those who have succeeded in ways they haven’t.

4. Ignorance of the Realities

For many civilians, the realities of military life are abstract and distant. The physical and emotional challenges faced by soldiers are often hidden from public view. This ignorance can breed a lack of respect and understanding. Without firsthand experience or a deep understanding of the sacrifices involved, it's easy to reduce military service to a series of misunderstandings or trivialize its significance.

5. Cultural and Societal Changes

In contemporary society, there’s also a cultural shift that might contribute to this phenomenon. As the nature of warfare and military service has evolved, and as fewer people have direct ties to the military, there’s a growing detachment from the realities of service. This detachment can lead to a lack of appreciation for the long-term commitment and sacrifices involved. Additionally, as societal values shift, traditional views on military service may be questioned or criticized more openly.

6. The Complexity of Post-Service Life

Finally, the challenges faced by veterans after their service, including reintegration into civilian life and dealing with psychological trauma, are often underappreciated. The complexities of transitioning from a highly structured military environment to civilian life can lead to misunderstandings and, in some cases, ridicule. Without a full grasp of these challenges, civilians might misinterpret veterans’ struggles as weaknesses or faults.

In conclusion, the ridicule faced by long-serving military personnel from those who have never served is rooted in a complex interplay of misconceptions, envy, ignorance, and cultural shifts. Addressing this issue requires a greater effort to educate and foster empathy, helping civilians understand and appreciate the unique sacrifices and experiences of those who have dedicated their lives to military service. By bridging this gap, we can move towards a society where the contributions of all individuals are recognized and respected.
