A Wannabe King?
In my new book, Why We Elect Narcissists and Sociopaths—And How We Can Stop! I suggest that we should watch out for high-conflict politicians with a drive for unlimited power (“HCP Wannabe Kings”). It may be that this president does share a desire to have king-like control over the country that some of these earlier malignant narcissists had and other authoritarian leaders around the world seem to have today. In the end, he may not be fundamentally different from these others–but our nation may be different, because of our built-in culture of democracy, our free press, and our legal restraints on power.
If he has a set of behaviors that grows in its dangerousness, then it would appear that it is malignant and that he needs to be reined in. If he accepts the limitations on his power imposed by the congress and the judiciary, and keeps an even keel psychologically without showing signs of distress, then perhaps he has no disorder and will not be dangerous. In either case, he has reached a point after two years in office that his behavior and personality has attracted the attention of many mental health experts and the public. This suggests that we should be concerned, regardless of whether he fits any particular mental health diagnosis.
Best-selling author, therapist, lawyer, and mediator Bill Eddy describes how dangerous, high-conflict personalities have gained power in governments worldwide - and what citizens can do to keep these people out of office.
Democracy is under siege. The reason isn’t politics but personalities: Too many countries have come under the sway of high-conflict people (HCPs) who have become politicians. Most of these high-conflict politicians have traits of narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial (i.e., sociopathic) personality disorder, or both. This is the first and only guide for identifying and thwarting them.
HCPs don’t avoid conflict, they thrive on it, widening social divisions and exacerbating international tensions. Eddy, the world’s leading authority on high-conflict personalities, explains why they’re so seductive and describes the telltale traits that define HCPs - he even includes a helpful list of forty typical HCP behaviors.
Drawing on historical examples from Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Nixon to Trump, Maduro, and Putin, Eddy shows how HCPs invent enemies and manufacture phony crises, so they can portray themselves as the sole heroic figure who can deal with them, despite their inability to actually solve problems. He describes the best ways to expose HCPs as the charlatans they are, reply to their empty and misleading promises, and find genuine leaders to support. Eddy brings his deep psychotherapeutic experience to bear on a previously unidentified phenomena that presents a real threat to the world.
Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump - A Critical Analysis
In the realm of contemporary politics, few figures have polarized public opinion as intensely as Donald Trump. His presidency was marked by controversy, unconventional behavior, and a style of governance that defied traditional norms. The documentary "#Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump" delves into the psychological aspects of Trump's personality and its impact on his leadership. Released in 2020 and directed by Dan Partland, the film offers a critical examination of Trump's mental fitness for office, drawing on insights from mental health professionals, journalists, and political commentators.
The documentary opens with a fundamental question: what makes Donald Trump tick? It explores his upbringing, business career, and ascent to political power, seeking to uncover the psychological underpinnings of his behavior. Central to the film is the concept of narcissism, with experts discussing Trump's apparent narcissistic traits and their implications for his decision-making and leadership style.
One of the key themes of "#Unfit" is the Goldwater Rule, which historically discouraged psychiatrists from diagnosing public figures without a personal examination. Despite this ethical guideline, the film features mental health professionals who break with tradition to offer their perspectives on Trump's mental state. This decision sparks a broader debate about the intersection of mental health, ethics, and public discourse.
Critics of Trump argue that his behavior reflects dangerous tendencies, such as impulsivity, disregard for norms and rules, and a propensity for conflict. They suggest that these traits, combined with his position of power, could have far-reaching consequences for the country and its institutions. The documentary presents a sobering analysis of these concerns, drawing parallels between Trump's leadership style and authoritarian tendencies observed in other historical contexts.
Conversely, supporters of Trump may view the documentary as part of a broader media narrative aimed at delegitimizing his presidency. They argue that focusing on his personality traits distracts from his policy achievements and the reasons behind his electoral success. This perspective underscores the deeply divided opinions surrounding Trump's legacy and the challenges of objective analysis in a politically charged environment.
Beyond Trump himself, "#Unfit" raises broader questions about the role of psychology in politics. It prompts viewers to consider how personal psychology shapes leadership, governance, and the dynamics of power. By exploring these themes, the documentary encourages reflection on the qualities and attributes that voters prioritize in their elected officials.
Critics have praised "#Unfit" for its thought-provoking approach and timely exploration of a contentious subject. They commend the film for providing a platform for nuanced discussions about mental health, leadership, and the responsibilities of public figures. However, some have cautioned that the documentary's focus on Trump's personality risks oversimplifying complex political phenomena and contributing to partisan divisions.
Ultimately, "#Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump" invites viewers to engage critically with the intersection of psychology and politics. Whether seen as a cautionary tale or a biased critique, the film underscores the importance of understanding the psychological dimensions of leadership in an increasingly interconnected world. As debates about Trump's legacy continue to unfold, "#Unfit" serves as a testament to the enduring impact of personality on political discourse and the ongoing search for insights into the minds of those who shape our collective future.
