America's Founders were committed to the idea that religion (by which virtually all of them meant Christianity) was necessary for public happiness and political prosperity… America's Founders did not want Congress to establish a national church, and many opposed establishments at the state level as well.

Both Jefferson and fellow Virginian James Madison felt that state support for a particular religion or for any religion was improper. They argued that compelling citizens to support through taxation a faith they did not follow violated their natural right to religious liberty.
